Applications and Auditions

Course Information

  • The ensemble will take place from 17th – 22nd July at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Dublin.
  • The fee for participation in the course is €250. A deposit will be payable on acceptance to secure your place.
  • The course is non-residential: IAYO will assist with hosting in Dublin for those that request this.
  • Daytime meals will be provided to participants.
  • Extra-curricular activities may be arranged on some days after rehearsals.
  • There will be an open rehearsal for family and friends on Friday 21st July.
  • There will be a full concert on the evening of Saturday 22nd July.

Application Information

  • Application is open to players from the 32 counties of Ireland and those with Irish or British citizenship living or studying abroad.
  • Entry to the Irish Youth Brass Ensemble is by application form and audition. Auditions will be offered on the basis of information provided in the application form and all applicants may not be auditioned.
  • Applicants should be aged between 16 and 25 during the course.
  • Applicants should be of a Grade 6 or similar standard. Ensemble experience is preferable.
  • Application for the Irish Youth Brass Ensemble is open to players of the following instruments:
    • Eb Soprano Cornet or Eb Trumpet
    • Bb Cornet or Bb Trumpet
    • Bb Flugelhorn
    • Eb Tenor Horn or French Horn (transpositions will be made available)
    • Baritone or Euphonioum (Bb treble clef and C bass clef)
    • Tenor Trombone (Bb treble (clef and C bass clef)
    • Bass Trombone (C bass clef)
    • Eb Tuba (treble and bass clef)
    • Bb Tuba (treble and bass clef)
    • Percussion (tuned, kit, timpani, auxiliary)
  • The closing date for applications is Monday, 10th April 2017.

Auditions

  • Auditions will be held on Friday 21st April in Belfast and on Saturday 22nd April in Dublin.
  • Other audition dates and venues may be announced dependent on demand.
  • Those offered audition will be interviewed and auditioned by the Artistic Director and one other person.
  • Auditions will be unaccompanied.
  • For audition, you will need to prepare two contrasting pieces, one of which should be a slow melody. Some suggestions of repertoire are:
    • Studies by J.B. Arban
    • Gramercy Practice Pad by Peter Graham
    • Five pieces for Bb instruments by Ernest Young
    • New Pieces for Trombone by Gordon Jacob
    • Grade 6 RIAM/ABRSM books (appropriate brass instrument)
    • Grade 6 RIAM/ABRSM Snare book
    • Grade 6 RIAM/ABRSM Tuned book
  • Sight reading will be provided, similar to Grade 6 level. View sample sight-reading.
  • Auditions may also have a short interview.
  • The audition will not take longer than 15 minutes.
  • If you have applied for more than one instrument you should bring all instruments to the audition.
  • IAYO will assist those people wishing to share lifts / travel costs to Dublin or Belfast to connect with others that are travelling.
