Auditions

  • Auditions will be online via Skype with the Artistic Director, Brendan Breslin.
  • The audition will not take longer than 15 minutes.
  • Auditions may also include a short interview.
  • If you have applied for more than one instrument you should prepare all instruments for the audition.
  • Auditions will be unaccompanied.
  • For the audition, brass players will need to prepare two contrasting pieces, one of which should be a slow melody. Some suggestions of repertoire are:
    • Studies by J.B. Arban
    • Gramercy Practice Pad by Peter Graham
    • Five pieces for Bb instruments by Ernest Young
    • New Pieces for Trombone by Gordon Jacob
    • Grade 6 RIAM/ABRSM books (appropriate brass instrument)
  • Percussionists will need to prepare one piece on tuned percussion and one on snare drum. Glockenspiel or xylophone are good but feel free to use others.
    • Pieces from the Grade 6 RIAM/ABRSM Snare and tuned percussion books are suitable although pieces do not have to be from these books.
  • Extracts will be provided by email / post as needed as soon as an audition is offered. This will be in lieu of sight reading so we will be aiming for a relatively short amount of prep time. For percussionists, the extracts will be on snare drum.
  • Using Skype:
    • A phone / tablet on a music stand with Skype and a reasonable Wi-Fi connection will be sufficient. A computer with webcam and microphone is also good, of course.
    • Skype is free and available for Windows, Mac, Xbox One, Linux, Android and iOS and through any supported web browser. You just need a Microsoft / Outlook account to log in and use it.
    • Give a little thought to the suitability of the room beforehand. If you have genuine difficulties (bandwidth, no equipment … please mark the relevant box on the application form).
